When it comes to your regular cleaning jobs, you might not be thinking about how time effective your routine is. Instead, most of us continue on housework autopilot.
This might be wasting your valuable time, however, and there are clever ways to speed up your cleaning tasks with some nifty household hacks.
The cleaning experts at the Good Housekeeping Institute have revealed 12 genius cleaning hacks to make your housework a lot easier and quicker, freeing up your time to do other, more enjoyable, things.
Here are their 12 cleaning tips…
1. 30 minutes only
Give yourself a time limit – set a timer for 30 minutes and try and get as much done as possible in that time. This will limit distractions and procrastination.
2. Job by job
Rather than cleaning room by room, try doing job by job instead, such as polishing or tidying up. The GHI advise leaving vacuuming and mopping until last.
3. Shopping list
A good tip for your grocery shopping is to keep a running list of items you need on your phone. This will ensure you always get what you need and you won’t be caught out.
4. Old newspaper
Put a couple of sheets of old newspaper in the bottom of bin liners to absorb any liquids within the bin.
5. Oven hack
To keep your oven spotless without having to scrub, line the base before use with a piece of foil or a clean oven sheet, such as Magic Non-Stick Liner from Lakeland (£10.79, Amazon). You’ll never have to clean the oven floor again!
6. Window cleaning
Beat the clock and get your windows seriously clean and shiny by adding a dash of dishwasher rinse aid to the water. Voila – streak-free windows!
7. Bathroom hacks
Make cleaning the bathroom easier by spraying the cleaning liquid on the tub and basin and leave it to work for 10 minutes before you rinse off. This will boost how effective it is.
8. Making the bed
Speed up the process of bed-making by keeping sets of sheets folded inside their matching pillowcases. This will free up cupboard space and you’ll be ready to go when you’re changing the beds.
9. The damp sock trick
Put a slightly damp sock over your hand and use it to dust your blinds. Showcase your best sock puppet skills, and then once dusting is finished, put the sock in the washing machine.
10. The dishwasher
Clean small fittings in your dishwasher, including fridge shelves and extractor fan filters.
11. Ironing time-saver
A great way to reduce ironing time is by slowing the spin speed of your washing machine. This will reduce creases in your clothes, which you then should shake out as soon as the cycle has finished.
12. Clingfilm hack
To stop clingilm or foil rolling out from the holder, push in the small, perforated tabs at each end of their boxes.
